almost locked in

I love having Wednesdays off. This morning, I got up a little later than normal. Then, I vacuumed and did some tidying up. I knew the post office closed at noon, so I made sure to leave in plenty of time. What I forgot to consider was that the grocery store closes at 12:30 every day but Friday and Saturday (on Sunday, it's only open in the morning).

While I was finishing my shopping, I noticed that it was rather empty in the store. At first, I thought it was simply because it was lunchtime and most people were off enjoying a delicious French lunch. Then, as I approached the cash register, it dawned on me...the store was closed. There was no "mesdames et messieurs, the store will be closing in 5 minutes" message like we get at home. I guess you're just supposed to watch the clock. Fortunately, there was a cashier still open, helping one other lonely shopper. The metal grates had already been lowered over all but the exit door, and it was 12:40. I just can't imagine what would have happened if I had spent one more minute drooling over the Christmas desserts. I guess I would have had to wait until the store reopened at 2:00pm. At least I could have had lunch.
