After the kids left Nice, my friends Aurélie and Stéphane met me at the airport and showed me "their" Nice. Stéphane grew up next to Nice in St. Laurent du Var, so he knows his way around. He was pleased to know I'd already discovered le vieux Nice and tasted several ice creams chez Fennochio. We ate pasta at Le Petit Gésu - their favorite restaurant, and walked through the marché provençal. Later, we had a picnic dinner on the beach in Villefranche-sur-Mer with their friends Florent and Anaïs and bébé Matisse.
Friday afternoon, we headed to the Alps to his parents' mountain home in Berthemont-les-Bains. They took us on a hike in the mountains - hiking boots, walking sticks, picnic and all. The hour and a half of climbing was worth the wait - we had our picnic next to a little lake nestled in the Alps. Along the way, we could hear the bells of the cows echoing in the
mountains and were on the lookout for chamois and marmots. The marmots were elusive -we could only hear their whistle-like call; however, we did see a chamois on our way back down the mountain.
