Young French children do not have school on Wednesdays. In some places, this is made up on Saturdays, but that seems to be a tradition that is disappearing. Middle school students in 4ème and 3ème have classes on Wednesday mornings, as do high school students, but the afternoons are free. At my school, there are no English classes on Wednesdays, so I have the day off with no obligation to be there!
My friend Véronique, whom I met last December when I traveled to Amiens with the other Oklahoma delegates, invited me to spend today with her and her family. She works at the réctorat, and usually arranges her schedule so she can be home with her three daughters on Wednesday afternoons. Her husband Jean-Pierre fixed a delicious lunch, and I got to witness the first day of school from the family perspective. Who are your teachers? What are they like? How are the other students? The girls' grandparents called to see how the first day went. It's comforting that despite so many cultural differences, the questions are still the same.
