My corner of France is chock-full of cool things to see. There are 56 belfries of Belgium and Northern France classified on the
UNESCO World Heritage list. It's easy to say I've seen a lot of the UNESCO sites - Avíla, Versailles, the Cathedral of Amiens... but how many belfries must one see to be able check that off your list? This year, I've seen the belfries in Bruges and Leuven, Belgium, as well as those of Lille, Amiens and Saint-Riquier in France. I think that should count, but I'm interested in seeing more. I've apparently missed those of Doullens, Rue and Arras, though I've been close. The one in Bergues plays a role in
Les Ch'tis. And then there's the belfry in Abbeville. That was going to be Michael's third - enough for him to cross belfries off his list. (I decided that three should count because if you've got three of something, it's a collection). Except that we couldn't find it. I've been to Abbeville at least five time this year, and I've never seen it. We drove around in circles, walked the Sunday afternoon abandoned streets, and yet it eluded us. There's a modern one next to the town hall, and apparently the old one is just a few steps behind it, but I guess we gave up too soon.
